An underrated gem of a film, Murray is a genius as always
June 30, 2015
Scrooged is probably one of the least known of the great Christmas movies, but if you have never seen it, it is absolutely worth watching. It's a modern-day retelling of "A Christmas Carol" and, in many ways, is among the best film versions of that story. First if all, it has a lot of humor, and I think Dickens would enjoy seeing his tale told with a lot of laughs. Also, Bill Murray is a fantastic actor and he really pulls off the Scrooge character (in the guise of a modern-day TV producer who puts profits ahead of things like, oh, his own life). Carol Cane is wonderful, she's so funny, and Buster Poindexter (aka David Johansen) is superb. Great. He doesn't make enough films.
There is almost nothing negative to say about this film, it's a vastly underrated film. And, for jazz fans, if you look closely, you'll catch Miles Davis as a street musician in NYC. Great touch.
